Josh has a story about -- oh, heck, it defies easy summary. Race, memory, and football. Johnny Bright was one of the greatest football players in American history. Read it.

Kathy to Hilary, July 22, 1972, Tehran, Iran. July 22, 1972 Dear Hilary I can’t write you an Ann Landers type letter a) because I am so amoral and if I preached then I would be obligated to practice, b) it’s been such a long time since I saw an Ann Landers or even a Dear Abby column that I’ve forgotten what they look like. However, one day not long ago my mother left on a conspicuous place (my bed) a book called “Ann Landers Answers Teenagers’ Questions about Sex.” Needless to day its advice has gone completely unheeded. You might want to look at “The Art of Loving” by Erich Fromm--it is NOT the Kama Sutra but that might not be a bad idea either. I think I remember that your parents have a copy of the Kama Sutra (illustrated) around.

. . .

. . . . I still cherish hopes of being an obscure don at Oxford--and I’ve lately developed a great love and aptitude for philosophy because of my Theory of Knowledge class in summer school, unfortunately I don’t know any Greek or Latin, which is a problem. I knew I should have insisted on Latin over Home Ec at Stratford! Lot of good Home Ec did. The only thing I can cook is an omelet. I’m hopeless. . . . .

Localism's Last Stand. Network giants got a surprise when Congress found a way to thwart their efforts to negate the F.C.C's cave-in to the networks' lust. But it was only half the battle. By William Safire. [New York Times: Opinion]

What does the music mean (Part 437)?

Can an MP3 Glutton Savor a Tune?. Shoveling ever more music onto CD shelves and computer hard drives has become almost a quest unto itself. By Rogier Van Bakel. [New York Times: Technology]

Barbie, Starbucks and freedom. Much of the "illegal art" in a major copyright-infringement exhibition is just plain silly. But the giant corporations that dominate our culture want to squash it anyway. [Salon Headlines]

Weblogging for poets.

Shelley Powers is launching her *.forpoets.org domain and plans to employ four different weblog tools to build the four initial branches of the site (weblogging.forpoets.org, internet.forpoets.org, linux.forpoets.org, rdf.forpoets.org), and to launch each subdomain with an essay on the weblog tool being used.

Even better, she is inviting her readers to recommend weblog tools for her to consider.
