Union workers at Powell's Books staged a one-day strike Wednesday to protest what they said were unfair labor practices by bookstore managers. (The Oregonian)
Union officials have lodged seven unfair labor practice charges against Powell's since Oct. 1, the day the labor contract expired, according to documents filed with the National Labor Relations Board. The charges allege Powell's managers have illegally discriminated against union officials for, among other things, conducting union business via company e-mail.

Another charge alleges that "agents of the company" have followed ILWU Local 5 President Mary Winzig at work and "spied on her activities," targeting her for "super-supervision."

Academics discover blog, mourn the fact that they will never be as trendy as Foucault despite discovery.
Jody over at the Big Dump Truck discovers that her blog is being discussed in an academic lecture. The results are hilarious:

  1. here the author (Jody) uses the products of capitalism to produce "her own mundane cultural forms and her means of communication"
And more . . . (thanks, Learning the Lessons of Nixon!)

Two from Wired News:
  • MS: Don't Force Us to Be Lousy. Under pressure from the European Union to modify its Windows operating system, Microsoft says that if it does, European consumers might be looking at a substandard version.
  • You Gotta Stop, Smell the Roses. It's midpoint on the Great Route 1 Road Trip. The main lesson learned so far is that slow is the way to go -- but that's easier said than done. Michelle Delio reports from charming rural North Carolina.

CC technology challenges.
In an effort to grow the technology around the Semantic Web, Creative Commons launched a series of Technology Challenges. Nathan Yergler has posted a very cool answer to one of those challenges. MozCC is "an extension for Mozilla-based browsers, including Mozilla Firebird, Mozilla and Netscape, which scans pages for RDF, specifically embedded Creative Commons licenses.  When a license is detected, mozCC does two things.  First, it scans for license information pertaining to the current web page and places relevant icons on the status bar.  Second, it enables a button on the toolbar which allows you to explore the parsed licensing metadata." Nathan has also developed a Creative Commons RDF License Validator.
