Rich has a good take on this, though I don't entirely agree this time. Our household doesn't take joy in the apprentices' failure, e.g., although seeing some of them get canned is satisfying. For those, there may be things in common with the pleasure people take at Stewart's comeuppance. There's also the lying thing in the latter, though, and not so much on the reality shows.
