From the Chronicle of higher Education, news that:
COLLEGE PROFESSORS AND SCHOOLTEACHERS differ significantly
in
their assessments of students' writing abilities, according
to two Chronicle surveys that are being released today as
part of a special supplement on the course of American
education. In the surveys, nearly half of faculty members --
but only 10 percent of teachers -- said students were not
well prepared for college-level writing. There was also a
large gap in the educators' views of mathematics readiness.

The gap is worse than the raw numbers suggest, when you consider that
college professors aren't inferring from a sample of all high school
students, but instead forming a judgment based only on observation of
those who go to college.
