This should have posted Monday, but computer fu seems to have prevented that. I repost it because
  1. it's important
  2. King's the only one I've seen with an answer, although others have mentioned the situation
  3. it's a way to stave off withdrawal, what with there being no game tonight

Many Students Who Enroll in Associate-Degree Programs Have No Intention of Graduating, Report Says, by Elyse Ashburn, CHE (subscription required).
The findings indicate that varying levels of motivation might be one reason that community-college students complete associate degrees at rates significantly lower than their peers at four-year institutions.

The results suggest, the report says, that if community-college graduation rates were based on students' expressing a clear intention of transfer or degree completion rather than simply being enrolled in a formal degree program, they would be considerably higher.
