Okay, no posts for awhile, I want to read all these links and Salon.com articles, lots of "just posted" ones on the front page -- some are Premium content but many are free as well.

Dave Cullen did some superb reporting for Salon on Columbine, and he's now started his own Salon Blog, "The Fact of the Matter Is." We've moved blogs.salon.com onto a different box and are hoping that the result is better performance. [Scott Rosenberg's Links & Comment]
I've been visiting my blog way too much so I'm guilty of overloading the server, I'm learning the features of this blog by trial and error, yeah, Refresh, edit, delete, post, play with template again, etc. It'll be a breeze soon, I hope.

PETER MANSBRIDGE: Back at home now, doctors in Quebec are threatening a confrontation with the provincial government. It is over a bill introduced yesterday that would force doctors to work in emergency rooms. It is in response to staff shortages at some Quebec hospitals where ERs have been temporarily closed. Matthew Pace explains.
MATTHEW PACE (Reporter): It is a sign there is something wrong with healthcare in Quebec. This emergency room in Jonquier is open during office hours only. Hospitals in Quebec often struggle with doctor shortages, now it is even worse. There are so many doctors on vacation, there aren't even enough of them to keep emergency rooms staffed. "It is a collective responsibility," says this doctor, "to provide these services to the community." Last month, those services weren't available at an emergency ward in Shawinigan. Bill Dufrene lived just a block away. He had a heart attack and had to be transported to a hospital 40 kilometres away in Trois-RiviSres, He died on the way there. Quebec's Minister of Health says he won't tolerate any more emergency rooms closing at any time. Francois Legault says they have to be open twenty-four hours a day, all week long. So, he is proposing temporary legislation to make sure ERs are always staffed.
FRANCOIS LEGAULT (Quebec Minister of Health): We have many problems in our health system in Quebec. We have a problem of resources. But one thing is clear, we have enough doctors in Quebec to guarantee a full coverage, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
PACE: Under his plan, each regional health board would assign doctors who have the training to work in emergency wards when they're needed. Those who refuse would lose three days pay and face fines of between one thousand dollars and five thousand dollars a day. Doctor representatives met today with the Minister and the Premier, but they still didn't come up with an agreement.
DR. RENALD DUTIL (Quebec Federation of General Practitioners): I must say now that it is going to be very, very difficult to maintain this consensus and partnership. There is a breach of confidence between the doctors and the minister with such a special (inaudible).
DR. STEPHANE AHERN (Quebec Federation of Medical Residents): We will not defy the law, but we will remain critical about ensuring good quality of care.
PACE: Members of Quebec's National Assembly will debate the bill tomorrow in a special session. Legault expects the bill will pass. Doctors say they will be there to protest a medical system they say isn't working. Matthew Pace, CBC News, Montreal.

Weblogs and health.
Glenn Reynolds sent me a pointer to Andrea See's quit-smoking weblog. I believe in this. For me, writing this weblog while I'm recuperating is very good therapy. If you've never smoked you might not understand. I'll try to explain.
When you're smoking, the cigarettes tell you many lies, including this one: "If you ever stop, you won't be able to do the things you love to do." Well, needless to say, I can write prose without smoking, I've proved that right here on Scripting News. I haven't tried to write code yet without it, but I'm sure I can do that too.
Here's another interesting angle. I started smoking when I was a virgin. So until I quit, on 6/14/02, I had never had sex as a non-smoker. I won't go into details, but it's quite a bit better without the cigarettes.
[Scripting News]
Yup, smokers think that smoking relieves stress, it doesn't, it increases it. On Monday I will have quit for two months. I'm allergic to cigarette smoke so I was especially stupid to smoke but the brainwashing by Hollywood I endured lead me to believe, even today, that smoking is cool. I loved lighting and puffing on cigs, especially at night, okay that's enough, time to play my positive-imaging audiobook again.

Au revoir, Blogspot. Hopefully, larger text capability and XML feeds, those are my wishes but will visit whether they're implemented or not.

Chicken Little learns to forecast. Over the last few years, the news media has had more and more opportunity to report on a certain class of events that could lead to the 'End of the World' as we know it. These opportunities are not born of conspiracy theories, religious Armageddon, or ancient prophecies. They are based upon the hard work of many astronomers hunting for large rocks traveling about the sun at high speed on paths that can intersect our world. The level of alarm in recent stories has generally been trending downward among the more reputable news sites. The level of exposure to these stories among the general public has been trending upwards. In the interests of understanding for everyone involved, a lesson for learning to read the forecast is provided here. [kuro5hin.org]

Come on out with your paws up! After receiving a call about a "huge rat" in Woodland Park in Kalispell, Mont., police jumped into action, sending three patrol cars and Animal Control. Officers cornered the beast behind this soda machine, but unfortunately it wriggled out of their trap.

Okay, so, I know how to link now, but can I write? We'll see if I too can be interesting. Speaking of interest, I've been getting behind on my Salon reading and now there's a new columnist.
