US F-15's almost shoot down Korean Airliner on 9-11 Pilots on Korean Air Flight 85 mistakenly issued a hijack alert at 1:24 p.m. ET on September 11th, as they neared Alaska on the way to Anchorage. Military officials, who had ordered two F-15 fighters to tail the jet, told Anchorage air traffic controllers that they would shoot it down if it did not turn away from populated areas. [MetaFilter]

Blogcritics: Hilary Rosen In the Financial Times: "Hilary Rosen In the Financial Times It's lonely at the top: Hilary Rosen, chairman and chief executive of the Recording Industry Association of America, has the kind of public profile most trade association chiefs would kill for. She is always in the papers..."

A friend from Newfoundland (thanks Doug) sent me this one. The minivan belongs to HITS FM, a St. John's radio station. Unfortunately, poor planning led to this when the door was opened... (Ranting & Roaring)

The Lord of the Rings dvd is great, yes, I'm late seeing this, I despise noisy theaters so I had to wait until now to see it.  Hmmmm, buy the two-disk release now, or wait until November when the four-disk release becomes available, yup, rent now, purchase later.

The Two Towers is going to be amazing, it's tempting to go see it in December, but no, I'll wait until I can have my own pause button and dvds next summer or so.

In this two-part series, USA TODAY reconstructs how the unprecedented order to clear the skies on Sept. 11 played out:

8:15 A.M., 3,623 other planes in the sky, and captain read the oddest message: “There has been a terrorist attack. Shut down all access to the flight deck”... [Part I] ... [Part II] {Arts & Letters Daily}

The standard explanation is that they're lazy and arrogant and expect everyone in the world to speak English. Well - surprise, surprise - that's not Philip Hensher's experience and it certainly isn't mine either. So why - or what - is it? [More inside.] [MetaFilter]

Fiction is a dangerous addiction, and I’m hooked.

Fiction warps our sense of reality, engenders a sense of entitlement and fosters narcissism... [She's Actual Size, Nationwide, Believe]
