File sharing: Guilty as charged?. New numbers on declining music sales could mean that MP3 trading really is hurting CD sales. But that still doesn't mean we should lock up the pirates. [Salon Headlines]

I gave up on Live365 streaming radio a few months ago because the spam was unbelievable, but I still linked to them for two of my favourite tenors: Bruno Pelletier and Jussi Bjorling on my personal homepage.  Anyway, an hour ago I went to visit to hear Pelletier and Bjorling radio stations and it now costs money.  I was a little disappointed at first but then I remembered the spam before.  I will now pay $5/month for no ads and access to these two great artists and many, many others.  I hope this $5/month helps keep Live 365 alive.

The Economist crunches census data from both sides of the Atlantic and figures that the US will hit the 500 million mark sometime in the next few decades, surpassing the combined population of even the expanded EU. In typical style, the Economist looks at the economic and political reprecussions of this, but skips another interesting question: how will a doubling of the population change America itself? will it make the US more environmentally friendly? reduce urban sprawl? will the shifting population balance change the culture itself? What happened to the U.S. on 9/11 is an enigma as baffling as Cortés’s appearance must have been to the Aztecs. Call it tragedy? Crime? Act of war? Try fantasy ideology... [more] [Arts & Letters Daily]

They realize that if I'm at home, that means I'm slouched on the couch, typing, drinking lukewarm coffee, manic but slightly unpleasant, with no time to chat them up. Yes, in truth, I probably do have time to chat, but I'd rather sulk silently all by myself... more

Let's practice our French by reading this great blog:

"Le premier été. C'est le premier été de leur amour. Tendre et inscrit dans le ventre de la terre, dans les vagues salées de la mer, et jusque dans le vol des oiseaux, dans le bourdonnement des insectes.

C'est déjà le mois d'août..."

I might live a little longer since No right turns on red lights in Quebec: paper (you may have to click the backspace button twice in your browser as CJAD likes to trap us there)

But the British, suffering for a lack of a John Ashcroft, stupidly allowed for fair trials and a right to counsel. They made the mistake of permitting judges to scrutinize both the act itself and the defendants being held pursuant to the act. So it should come as no surprise that the first English terror trial following Sept. 11 ended two weeks ago in an acquittal...more

I even downloaded it as a 20MB PDF for viewing later. Is this the future of newspapers? Are we headed towards paper-less editions of the newspaper? [More...] [MetaFilter]

Revenge of the Tweezer People
By
Glenn Harlan Reynolds

Call it the revenge of the tweezer people. The backlash against senseless -- and useless -- airport security rules is building up into something nasty. [The American Times]
