One of the highlights of my weekend was discovering the "sap rocket", a devlishly low tech and endlessly entertaining device that, according to the mighty Google, does not exist. Nonetheless, if you take a small stick, say a bit smaller than a pencil, carve it to a point at both ends and cover it with pine sap, it will (sometimes) propel itself slowly through lake water.
I have this on good authority from several pre-teen boys who conducted extensive experiments on sap rocketry. For well over an hour, around dusk, these intrepid rocketeers were scouring the woods for candidate sticks, droning "sap rocket this", "sap rocket that", "mutter mutter sap rocket blah blah blah". Where have I been for 43 years that I've never heard of such a thing? I 've had pine cone fights, covered my hands with it by popping sap blisters on trees, even eaten the stuff. But rockets? |

Rushkoff "I try not to make career or education decisions based on whether they will 'fulfill' me or lead to my greater happiness. I always start from the changes I want to see in the world, and then get the training or the orientation I need to make them." When I reflect on the twists and turns of my life, it's my interests that have been best at moving me from one phase to the next. I can be pretty goal-oriented at times (second degree black belt in karate) but it's always preceded by the tugging of interest: curiosity, urge, wonder. So I'd amend Rushkoff's advice to factor in the tides of your imagination. Otherwise you end up spending a lot of time pushing boulders uphill. 11:15:08 AM | permalink | comment [] |

Gary was also at the Cape on the weekend and he's posted his notes and photos. Oops! The photo site is returning a page titled "20 Meg limit exceeded". Daily limit of free transfers, it seems. Oh well. Tune in tomorrow. 10:47:29 AM | permalink | comment [] |

Cool! Gary has a blog. MrG is a superhuman source of information on far too many topics. I suspect he is in fact a robot, which would explain his computing bent. His musical proficiency is obviously some sort of advanced simulation. ![]() 10:43:58 AM | permalink | comment [] |

Back from a fantastic weekend of camping and music at Cape Croker. The weather and water temperatures were surreal for Labour Day weekend. No complaints here, mind you. 10:43:43 AM | permalink | comment [] |
