Melancholy Elephants Dreams should be forgotten when we wake. Or one day we will find ourselves unable to sleep." 5:42:26 PM | permalink | comment [] |

Laptops as a Fourth "R" "Just putting a violin in a classroom won't turn a student into a musician. Computers by themselves won't create scholars. Computers can be thinking tools, a sophisticated way to expand a child's ability to analyze and explore. Many school officials from around the world are waiting to see how effectively Maine can achieve that critical educational goal." 2:58:41 PM | permalink | comment [] |

Music preview: Mecca Normal. The Canadian avant-garde folk duo's tenth album, "The Family Swan," pairs deliriously intense vocals with sublime guitar work. Listen in. [Salon Headlines] Quote: "We used to be on a cycle of recording then touring, and we always felt the songs got better after we'd played them live".
This is true in my limited experience. Trying to fix a song in place before you've played it a number of times in front of people almost always misses the mark. Certain elements of a song that are invisible at home suddenly become obvious in performance. That said, based on the sample, I won't be a fan anytime soon. 7:58:56 AM | permalink | comment [] |

Klein prepares for battle over Kyoto "Ratifying the Kyoto Protocol now would be like signing a mortgage for a property you have never seen at a price you've never discussed," Mr. Klein said. "We still don't know how much Kyoto will cost, how it will be implemented and what role the different provinces will play." [The Globe And Mail - National] Hey Alberta - do us all a favour and get rid of this guy at the next possible opportunity, would you? We're talking about modest steps towards reducing greenhouse gases, not rocket science. He sounds like a US congressman with a briefcase full of Jack's money. No doubt someone else is footing Ralph's bill. 7:36:48 AM | permalink | comment [] |

Reel politic unlikely to distress the middle mind "The middle mind is liberal," he writes. "It wants to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and has bought an SUV with the intent of visiting it. It even understands in some indistinct way that that very SUV spells the Arctic's doom." [The Globe And Mail - Arts] This is a provocative and insightful article about the dichotomies inherent in US thinking. I think much of it applies to North American and perhaps even Western thinking in general. 7:16:28 AM | permalink | comment [] |
