Turd-harvested coffee in the news Another one of those end-of-history headlines: "Marsupial-manure coffee is flying off the shelves." This isn't a very new story; turd-java (where the partially digested beans are harvested from the feces of an animal that eats 'em in the wild) has been a weird-ass coffee-fetish that's been creeping into the mainstream for a couple years. And what could be more mainstream than a conservative cattle-country burg like Edmonton? 9:26:52 AM | permalink | comment [] |

Stop the holy showboating
"In the realm of jock theology, God seems to show himself only to the winners. While many athletes do their own dances or gyrations to gain attention from the fans and TV cameras, many others seek their own spotlight through very public prayer on the field of play. It is a curious trend in the "hey-look-at-me" form of self-promotion that has infected pro sports in recent decades. And it goes beyond making a sign of the cross before taking a few swings at the plate. It's almost as if these jocks are saying: "God thinks I'm special, so you should too."

The Raven on the likely consequences of a war with Iraq:
"If the U.S. forces a regime change in Iraq, the result won't be punctuated with rivers of barefoot children following American tanks rumbling down the streets of Baghdad, it will be marked with the sounds of gunfire, killing, and screaming as the Shiite majority take bloody revenge on the oppressing Baath Party that have subjugated the Shiites ever since Saddam took power. This is the scenario painted by Nicholas Kristof in an op-ed article in yesterday's NYT, and he argues the picture brilliantly."
I admit to being rather mystified as to what the U.S. does want. There appear to be no end of possible reasons, from family feud to energy realpolitik to good ol' fighting the forces of evil. Somehow none of these quite have the ring of truth. I have to wonder whether an unstable Iraq torn by civil war might in fact be the desired outcome. 8:48:57 AM | permalink | comment [] |
