The Raven: Open up! It's the police!
"So start shopping while the doors are still open and don't worry if you overstock, because a lot of these items can be used in the bedroom."

The plot chickens
U.S. Marines, in what has been called Operation Kuwaiti Field Chicken, are planning to use "Poultry Chemical Confirmation Devices" as part of an early-warning system against chemical weapons; the devices, which consist of chickens in cages, will be installed on top of the Marines' Humvees before they roar off into battle."

Tapscott: Is it closing time for the music industry?
"This is great news for budding musicians, since music isn't exclusionary in its use. In an increasingly hectic society, almost all of us have less time for the activities we enjoy, except listening to music. Music makes a good experience better...

"The upshot is that consumers want to listen to a greater number of artists. Greater total listening time equals greater number of artists listened to. Restated, the consumers' lust for variety means they will happily listen to artists whose CDs they previously wouldn't have wanted or afforded to buy...

"Most businesspeople would feel they had died and gone to heaven if their customers showed the same zeal for their products as people feel towards music. But the music industry behaves as if this is a curse."

I've had an old PowerBook (Wallstreet) sitting on my stereo for six months, streaming RadioParadise.Com over my WiFi network for hours a day. I've PayPal'd money to RP several times and try to buy CDs via their Amazon.Ca link so they get a piece. It's brilliant.

Here's an internal memo showing how US radio monopolist ClearChannel prepares for war (emphasis mine):

"If you are going to make a mistake, do too much network. Especially early. THIS IS WAR. We will only get hurt by not giving people enough information at a time like this not by giving them too much... Always err on the side of overkill. Actually, there is no such thing as overkill in a situation like this... The initial hours of coverage are critical. People who have never listened to our stations will be tuning in out of curiosity, desperation, panic and a hunger for information. RIGHT NOW, convert them to P-1's, or at least make them a future cumer. We must make sure we meet their expectations, otherwise they're gone forever and they ain't coming back."

I have no idea what a "P-1" is, let alone a "cumer" (How is that pronounced? The mind reels). Presumably a P-1 is someone who erroneously believes that radio gives him or her a balanced, informed view of the world. Preferably a homeowner without children, 35 years old, earning between $50K and $75K a year...
