Two things I disagree with in Tapscott's piece in the Globe. First, I don't want to pay my ISP for streaming audio because that just sets them up as the new record labels (think AOL, MSN, Earthlink). I want to pay the site that does the programming, thanks; they'll be paying the performance or songwriting royalties to the artists. Second, I'll continue to buy CDs no matter how streamy I get. Some music is worth owning, period. And if CDs ever shed their surreal pricing and get below $10 Canadian, I'll buy a lot more.

Wait, make that three things: "exclusionary" is not a word, Don. The word is "exclusive".

John Perry Barlow: Sympathy for the Devil
"In the final analysis, this may simply be about oil, but I doubt that Dick [Cheney] sees it that way. I am relatively certain that he is acting in the service of principles to which he has devoted megawatts of a kind of thought that is unimpeded by sentiment or other emotional overhead."

Interesting phrase that, "unimpeded by sentiment or other emotional overhead". And here I thought the era of exclusively rational thought had blown itself out, that we'd accepted the fact that something in addition to boolean equations might be required to work on The Big Problems. Nonetheless, this is a must-read piece.

E-Learning Post: Beyond cardsorting: Free-listing methods to explore user categorizations
"Free-listing is a semi-structured method. It can be conducted as part of an interview, or as a written exercise (and can be done online as well). Simply ask the respondent, 'Name all the x's you know.' Give them sufficient time to do so. If they stop after very few items, encourage them by saying, 'Can you think of any more?'"

Critics accused of killing the great chefs of France
"The Cote d'Or became a luxury inn, a line of pre-cooked foods was launched, three restaurants were opened in Paris, and in 1998 he became the world's first chef to obtain a stockmarket listing." [Via Google Top Stories ]
It's tragic for someone to take his or her own life, but the notion that critics are to blame is ludicrous. People choose to be in the public eye and they're free to choose another path. If you can't stand the heat, don't blame the appliances.
