BTW, some people had problems with the Boing Boing link to the GoogleHacks book, so here's the link to the O'Reilly page for same.

PatD: Those who know probably don't blog
"I spent about 5 years of my life studying Chinese Mandarin"
The odd one does - know, that is. Thus one of my more memorable training moments: a crazy white Anglo talkin' Mandarin trash during a session. The very kind of thing that edges our consciousness along its journey from 1) Everything is, to 2) Everything is what it seems, followed by 3) Some things are not what they seem, and then 4) Nothing is what is seems, and finally 5) Nothing is.

So much for brevity, eh? Sop sop soyaaa! Or something like that...

Dan Gillmor: Broadband competition might still be possible
"The radio-based Canopy system uses unlicensed spectrum, so no one has to ask for regulatory approval. The price is low enough -- a company or Internet service provider can serve hundreds of customers for about $20,000 in start-up equipment costs -- and it looks easy to deploy. Best of all, it offers excellent data-transfer rates, in the range of 6 to 7 megabits a second, which is much faster than the cable and phone-based alternatives today, though ISPs offering Canopy-based services commonly ratchet down individual customers' capacity to some extent."

Bring it! Competition for high-speed access would be a Very Good Thing, and unlicensed spectrum seems to be the only way that's going to happen.

Went snowboarding with my son last night. The snow - which continues to fall almost every day it seems - was great. It was cold and there was a beautiful crescent moon in the clear sky. Also had my first BeaverTail, a Killaloe Sunrise: sugar, cinnamon and lemon. It was very good, although I would've appreciated a roaring bonfire to go with.

PS. If you followed that BeaverTails link, how 'bout those wacky lava lamp navigation links?
