Apocalypse Now

On the subject of North Korea, there are two groups of people in Washington today: People who are terrified, and people who aren't paying attention. Unfortunately, the latter category seems to include the president of the United States.

The New Republic on the Administration's attitude towards North Korea.  They come to one of two conclusions.

  1. They're waiting for victory in Iraq to begin talks when it would presumably have high levels of domestic support.
  2. As TNR, quoting Stanley Kurtz puts it: "If our policy is to strike when we may and must, silence makes a good deal of sense."

Oh yeah, and please ignore that other large elephant reprocessing uranium - this time just around the corner from Baghdad.  They are also not a more imminent threat.

Hart on War

The war on terrorism is too serious to become the vehicle for settling old scores, either abroad or between neo-hawks and traditionalists in the administration. It is also too serious to become an excuse -- a kind of foreign policy Trojan horse -- to experiment with the new doctrine of preemption to replace containment. And if we really do intend to bring democracy to the Arab world at the point of a bayonet, the American people deserve the candid accounting we have not been given.

Hart has an editorial in the Washington Post tomorrow.  While I agree with the general tone of the piece, I think Hart could give a bit more credit to Bush for the terrorist arrests in recent days.  Yes, Iraq has become an unhealthy obsession for Bush.  Yes, we aren't prepared for the terrorist attacks that will probably follow an invasion.  But the recent arrests do show that something is being done right in the real War on Terror - even if the principles of international cooperation which brought the arrests about are being flaunted by the focus on Iraq.
