A few days ago you were scootering down the street and you made the observation that it was pretty hard to believe that it's already been a year since September 11th and people are still talking about it. This obviously confused you. You stopped your scooter, made the following observation, "I thought everyone would have forgotten it by now. It doesn't seem that much different than any of the other horrible stories we hear about what goes on in the world." and then you asked me "Daba, why is September 11th so important to so many people?" I tried to explain that the events of that day were a catastrophe. You know how people will stop their cars to look at a traffic accident. September 11th is like that because even though it doesn't directly effect you it was a spectacle which draws the eyes. Of course September 11th was also completely different than that. It was the latest attack in a war which has been waged since before you were born. Tonight we talked about it again. You are very perceptive to say that oil seems to be the key to all of this tragedy. It is obvious that all the money going into countries which treat their young girls and women like these Islamic fundamentalist do would want to destroy us because women in the west show themselves. You described so well the burka, your hands over your face except your eyes, and wonder how horrible that must be to have to wear that every day. I don't honestly know the rules of how all of that works, when they can be exposed, when they can't, when the women need to be escorted in public and when they don't. But I agree it does sound terrible to be treated that way. It is good to see you think these very difficult events through. You have good opinions. They are still ill-informed but you are very curious and you really really want to understand why everyone cares so much about 9/11 and the war.
