Damn...now The Wire is over. I'm thinking next season is New York - from the vague hint at the end with Omar doing his ol' stick-up routine in the South Bronx. But hey, I'm just guessin'. Great show - best cop show since Homicide, which will stand as the greatest cop show of all time unless something simply amazing comes along. The Wire is close, but not that good.

Snippets from next season of Sopranos. Looks insane and therefore good. =)

Ok, I couldn't REALLY stop. I had a mildly strange evening last night, and I haven't written anything about it - I feel very out of character. Anyway -

I bought a sofa and loveseat yesterday - $1500. They both recline - four people will be able to recline in my apartment at any one time. THAT is the definition of luxury. What's more, the name of the fabric they came in - commando kelp. I get an image of seaweed with a bandana, big eyes, and a machine gun.

Hey! Greggs isn't dead! (Wire. Don't ask - I've gotten seriously obsessed with this show.)

I had dinner with Polly, my ex, last night - fish and chips. Really great time - made me real happy, to say the least. I think we're going to actually be able to be friends, which is a real good thing, since she works literally on the other side of the Concord River from my apartment building. It was real nice...

Also, while driving around Lowell yesterday, I could have *sworn* I saw another ex of mine - Lucy, from the second half of senior year in high school. She remains kind of the ideal to me - I never fucked up that relationship, as I did, well, every other one I was in, to one extent or another. She was two years younger than me, and so much more suited to me than anyone else I've dated since. Relationship ended after fall break my first semester in college...distance and all. Anyway, I checked online and - tada - she lives in Lowell, a mile and a half down the road. I'm terrified that I'm going to give her a call, which would just be stupid - I haven't even SEEN her in 4+ years. Oy.

Right - that's it for now. The Wire demands my attention - my last Dominic West fix until I get around to renting McKellan's Richard III and watching Rock Star one of the 1,000 times it ends up on movie channels...

Abattoirs warned over food bug. Many cases of chicken-related food poisoning may be caused by poor hygiene at abattoirs¸ government scientists have found. [BBC News | UK]

When you hear/read the word 'abattoir', what do you think? While I guess I assumed it had a meaning before the Holocuast, the word conjures up images of death camps for me, and not much else. My first reaction to the above headline was therefore a bit strange.

Anyway- must stop blogging. The Wire is about to start, and it's more important than you. =)

Massive Coalition Air Strike Part of Prelude To War. The UK Telegraph is carrying an article about a recent large scale air attack near the southern no-fly zone over Iraq. Such airstrikes are a routine response to Iraqi attempts to target and shoot down aircraft patrolling the no-fly zones (in violation of the 1991 Cease Fire Agreement), but what makes this strike significant is that over 100 aircraft were involved. Some analysts point to this type or airstrike being similar to diversionary strikes staged to allow Special Forces insertions elsewhere. Meanwhile, the UK Independant details buildup preparations including heavy armored vehicles being shipped to the region. Fox News has an article about more preparations and Saddam Husseins advanced nuclear WMD program. [kuro5hin.org]

Hey! Saddam! look at those exploding thingies! <boom>

I don't know why, but using bombings to distract somebody seems bizarrely entertaining to me. Must be Monty Python and the Simpsons - exploding cats and such from MP, everything exploding into flames when crashed or crashed into on the Simpsons. I've been desensitized. Or maybe I'm just tired.

What She Said. reverse cowgirl once again has the best critique around of the smarly little "chat" between Sullivan and Andersen at Slate:
under the MSN umbrella, Anderson and Sullivan sit muttering about blogging before a pre-packed audience, waiting for a pre-decided upon paycheck, generating prose to be processed by a pre-ordained editor. in all its dull lifelessness, their blog discussion serves as the perfect example of what blogging should not be. for now, blogging would be better served outside the media giant's grasp if it is to have any chance of breathing life back into the corpses of writers beaten down by too many editors and magazines that prostitute themselves in a medium that has sold-out to the masses.

Even though she's kicking my ass in the readership column lately I have to give props. [Radio Free Blogistan]

xian, she's hotter than you. Hence, more hits. =) She's a quality writer, too, but let's be honest - it's the hotness.

(snip)

His family left Russia when he was five, lived in Israel for ten years, then settled in Brooklyn, NY in '85. He served in the Gulf War, got his Masters from Yale, and is seriously pissed off that you can't get a VHS or DVD copy of "Smiley's People" in the US. (If I got any of that wrong, I'm sure I'll hear about it)

[She's Actual Size, Nationwide, Believe]

My dad has a copy of 'Smiley's People' on tape, I think, off PBS. He had a serious LeCarre thing for a long time - I remember trying to watch 'Tinker Tailor' and falling asleep.

Adam Curry had dinner with a Dutch member of Parliament, found out that the Dutch are going to back US in bombing Iraq with or without UN approval. [Scripting News]

Am I the only one a little weirded out that a former friggin' VJ is breaking this kind of news?

Just watched Royal Tenenbaums for the first time - bought it on a whim. That was a great movie - admittedly, I watch a lot of movies and think they're great, but this one was REALLY great. I need to watch it again - I'm seriously considering starting it again right now, but The Wire season finales at 10, and I've got ClearCase Administration training tomorrow morning. That was a truly great movie.
