A Swift Dose Of Rand Gives The Boardroom A Hand. Plastic::Work::Trends: Who is this Ayn Rand person anyway? And why do CEOs love her so? [Plastic: Most Recent] Bleh - the idea of anyone taking inspiration from Ayn Rand saddens me. How can you take that madwoman seriously? I don't get it. Her writing is pretty shitty, her ideas are just as ridiculous as Marx...and yet our economy is controlled by devotees of hers. Ick. |

Man Utd hold off Leverkusen. Ruud van Nistelrooy scores twice as Man Utd defeat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in the Champions League. [BBC News | Front Page] Damn! Evil Yankee-partner Man United beats a German team with my name in it! It's all a friggin' conspiracy! |

Just bounced over to Law and Order rerun on TNT - and lo and behold, that's two episodes of L+O I've seen in a row featuring future Sopranos stars. Janice (Aida Turturro) had a minor role in one episode, and Chris Moltisanti (Michael Imperioli) is the killer in this one. It's really strange hearing Chris talking without the thick Jersey accent... |

I just broke down and ordered a TiVo. I think that with a little effort, I should be able to set it up to record one thing while I'm watching another, as long as I'm watching something on analog cable. If I can't? I'll live - it'll still grab every episode of Homicide conceivable, which is my main reason for buying the TiVo in the first place... |

From the how-did-we-live-before-the-Internet? department: Actually, this is a combination of Internet bits. A week ago yesterday, I, on a whim, decided I needed some new books. I hit Amazon, and ordered myself 6 books. On Wednesday, I was told it shipped by an email from Amazon. From that point onward, I've been manically checking the UPS Tracking page for the latest information on my package o' books. It stalled out for a couple days - sitting on "Billing Information Received", with a location somewhere in the US. Then, on Friday Sept. 20 - it went on the move. It was "Departure Scan"ned from Cach, IL and then was "In Transit" to Chelmsford, MA, where I know there's a large UPS distribution center. The scheduled delivery said Sept. 23 - so Monday, I thought, I'll have my books! Monday passed - no books. The tracking information stayed the same, even the scheduled delivery stayed the same when I checked today, Tuesday morning. But sometime early in the afternoon, an update! 12:26 pm today, an "Arrival Scan" in Chelmsford! Oh, happy day! Soon, I should see those wonderful words - "Out For Delivery"! My office is just down the road from the UPS distro center, so when the tracking page says it's out for delivery, I've only got an hour or two before my package is in the hands of our shipping/receiving people. Of course, it can take another couple hours, or even couple days, for them to deliver it to my cube, but once the tracking page says it's been delivered, I know I can go pick it up whenever I want. Hurrah! So how did we ever live without this? I know, before Amazon and its ilk, we didn't order near as much from mail-order catalogs as we do from the Internet now, but still? I've gotten to the point where I expect everything NOW, even when I take the cheap or free shipping option that delays things by days. I leave the detailed tracking page open in a browser window and reload it every few minutes - you never know when it might update! I am such a junkie for information... |

Gunmen storm Hindu temple. Unidentified gunmen kill at least 23 people after storming a Hindu temple in India's western Gujarat state¸ the authorities say. [BBC News | WORLD] This is so very ungood. The last time something like this happened (a train filled with Hindu millitants was burned, killing many), the Muslims of Gujarat were slaughtered by the thousands for weeks. |

posted by Beholder at September 24 5:31 AM. Don't forget to meet some old friends tonight. Warning the official link is a spoiler, so you've been warned. [MetaFilter] Eugh...the Goo-Goo Dolls are playing on Buffy tonight. There goes MY appetite. If I want a wannabe Replacements band with a wannabe pretty boy lead singer, I'll go listen to old Soul Asylum. |

Glimpse of Darwin's legacy [BBC Science & Nature] The British Natural History Museum has just opened its new Darwin Centre, at a cost of around $150 million. They've got 22 million (!) specimens, stored in 450,000 jars, taking up 27 kilometers of shelf space. They're moving plants and insects (around 34 million specimens combined) in 2007. You can also see the museum scientists at work. I went to the the Museum my first day in London, when my mom and I went in February. We were wasted by jet lag, but I loved it. Now I need to go back... |

Belarus denies selling Iraq weapons [BBC World] According to the NY Times, Ukraine has sold radar to the Iraqis as well. If both Belarus and Ukraine did sell to Iraq, I'd have to think that the Russians are actually behind it. I mean, Belarus is just a puppet anyway. |

posted by kirkaracha at September 23 11:34 PM. I vividly remember watching Ken Burns' amazingly great The Civil War during the Gulf War. Now that we're apparently having a Gulf War sequel, The Civil War has been remastered and re-released. The Washington Post jumps on the bandwagon with an online discussion with Ken Burns and a great Flash map of the campaign from the Seven Days to Antietam. [MetaFilter] I'm seriously considering picking this up - I'm a sucker for really good documentaries on DVD... |
