You must see tonight's Sopranos episode. Simply amazing, maybe the best episode yet, IMHO. The scene in the old hitmen's house in Rhode Island is unbelievable...

A picture named greenmap.gifOn the western coast of Greenland, there's a town called Aasiaat. It's on the southern corner of Disco Bay - I shit you not. They have a museum there (in Danish or English). It's the building in the picture. It's the first site listed at Yahoo's directory entry for Arts>Humanities>History>Museums and Memorials, which is how I came across it. The double-a gets it listed first, of course - same logic as the AA Auto Mechanic in the Yellow Pages, but I don't think they named their city for that reason. The full name for the museum in some language (I don't know which one, but it don't look very Nordic) is Aasiaat Katersugaasiviat. Now THAT is a name.

But I digress - this museum is just too cute. I know, I know, but listen to some bits from the web page - "The museum started out with a very limited collection, but efforts have been made to collect a considerable amount of items, among other things the Johansens' more than 100-year-old umiaq, Esaias Jeremiassen's kayak along with kayak tackle from the 30s." I need to explore this site more - Sopranos on now.

posted by jasonbondshow to Baseball October 6 6:39 PM. Twins win! Twins win!Bud Selig must be having ulcers right about now. The Twins hold off a rally by the Oakland A's in the ninth to adavnce to the ALCS. [SportsFilter]

Gimme Game 7, Twins, Braves, Metrodome, and bring Jack Morris out of retirement. Watching Game 4 at the Homerdome reminded me of '87 and the Homer Hankies - that World Series, with Kirby, Kent, etc kind of made up for '86. I watched the Cardinals get whipped by the Twinkies on a black and white tv in my parents' bedroom. Oh yeah, I'm rooting for the Twins now, baby.

Meanwhile, the Giants are up 2-0 in the bottom of the second. They finally found a way to get the opposing team to pitch to Bonds - load the bases with no outs. Ironically, he sac flyed. =)

Lula takes lead in Brazil elections. Exit polls give left-wing candidate Luiz Lula da Silva the lead in Brazil's presidential election¸ but suggest he is short of an outright majority. [BBC News | WORLD]

Yay Lula! Yeah, it's not as good as it could be (he needs an outright majority to avoid a runoff, which he *could* lose), but it's another victory for left-wing parties in a major democracy. Sweden, Germany, Brazil...this is good. The momentum is finally beginning to swing back to the left. Now I'm just waiting for here.

...and now heeeeeere's Jerry.

He says "I think Mohammed was a terrorist," and the interviewer then asks that if Moses and Jesus represent the examples that Jews and Christians follow, does Mohammed represent an example/ideal for Moslems, as a terorrist? Falwell replies - yes. Gah. Again.

The ultra-disturbing Christian fundamentalists have been getting covered very well lately - there was a great article in Salon a few months back, Newsweek did a story on the Left Behind series... but it still weirds me out. I'm a New Englander, with ex-Catholic anti-religious parents. How can I possibly understand the thought process these people have?

7:37:35 PM

Holy fuck - I'm watching 60 Minutes and some Christian fundamentalist maniac - Kay Adams? Something like that - is saying that God wanted Rabin killed for the Oslo agreements. I can't believe this. And now the Israeli government is happy about the support from these nutcases. Gah.

Muslim anger at Prophet slur. Iran adds its voice to condemnation of a Christian evangelist in the US who called the Prophet Mohammed "a terrorist". [BBC News | WORLD]

Oh, this is going down well - Falwell's going to call Mohammed a terrorist on 60 Minutes tonight. Friggin' idiot.

Non Disputandum Est

Do you like to read really good food-writing? We certainly do. Because eating is an integral part of our lives that combines so well with wine and romance, perfectly tuned phrases that capture the soul of a brilliant dish can also inflame the imagination and fire our desires for culinary experimentation.

A review of Marcella Hazan's recipe for Pasta Carbonara that ran this week in the LA Times is one of the best I've ever read.

It's for food lovers. It's food best eaten warm, right from the stove, in the kitchen, as dinner for two. The preparation of spaghetti carbonara could not be more congenial. It comes replete with its own dynamic, its own tantalizing tempo and heady succession of good smells.

We made this last night, and followed the reviewer's suggestion of adding a simple watercress salad whose peppery spiciness perfectly balanced the earthy flavors of pancetta, parsely, and Parmigiano-Reggiano. A crisp Soave and a background accompaniment of Kenny Burrell's Midnight Blue had the Raven and Ravenatrix making eyes at each other over the candlelight well before the plates were cleared.

[The Raven]

mmm...I love carbonara. Now my pizza looks like crap in comparison.

Craft 'rammed' Yemen oil tanker. The owners of a French oil tanker on fire off the coast of Yemen say they believe it was struck by a vessel¸ before exploding into flames. [BBC News | Front Page]

Ok, maybe it was a ramming after all.

Explosion Sets Off Fire on French Tanker Near Yemen [New York Times: International News]

Welcome to the wonders of real-time news - the first reports claimed that a small boat filled with explosives rammed the tanker, a la the USS Cole, but the Yemeni government blames the incident on an accident during refueling. It used to be we'd never hear anything until at least preliminary conclusions had been reached - now everything's so immediate that we hear every speculation along the way. I'm not sure how I feel about this - part of me loves the information overload aspects, but I'd like there to be a bit more truth in the world.

Brazil chooses its future course. A left-winger feared by the markets is favourite to win Brazil's presidential election which could have widespread repercussions. [BBC News | WORLD]

The irony of this is that the Brazilian economy has tanked as a result of the market fears already. The collapse of the Brazilian currency makes it a lot harder for the next Brazilian government to pay off its debts, which makes it more likely that they'll have to delay payments or default on the debt, which puts the economy in even worse shape, etc, etc, etc... All because a leftist might win an election.
