Bush's speech o' misinformation can be read here, btw. |

Realtime blogging of about 2/3 of Bush's bullshit tonight: "Saddam Hussein is a homicidal dictator who is addicted to weapons of mass destruction," George W. Bush, just now, in his propaganda piece tonight... Is there a 12 Step program for that? Oh, and now he's talking about Iraq's anthrax supplies. And who sold them the viral culture they used to grow the rest of it? Oh yeah, us. I'm failing to see anything in this speech but "He's got bad stuff! He's bad! He's done bad stuff! He's bad!" Oh, since they've got ballistic missles that can hit our troops in the Middle East, we need to attack 'em now. And supposedly, the Iraqis are trying to use unarmed aerial vehicles to attack the US. Rrrright. Like friggin' drones can fly across the Atlantic. Bush's terrorists-being-supported-by-Iraq examples? The only ones he actually can name are Abu Nidal, who's friggin' dead, and Abu Abbas, who hasn't done, well, anything since the Achille Lauro. Now he's saying that Iraq and al Qaeda have had contact for over a decade. Huh? al Qaeda didn't even EXIST a decade ago. The only bit of hard evidence he's giving is that Saddam was happy after 9/11. Uh-oh! Saddam could, "any day now," give gas or anthrax or something to terrorists. So could the Chinese, the Pakistanis, the Indians, the Israelis, the Russians, the French, the British, us... And he's insistent, I say INSISTENT, that Operation Whaq Iraq would be part of the war on terror. Iraq, it seems, came close to getting nuclear weapons before the Gulf War. And so, we're supposed to assume, they could be close again. Of course, in 1990-1991 they hadn't yet had the shit bombed out of them on a semi-regular basis for a decade. I'm sure Hussein is trying to get a bomb, but I'm not all that worried about him getting 'em now. Oh, Bush says that Iraq tried to be aluminium tubes! Oh shit! We're fucked now! But seriously, said tubes are a sign of how extremely far from having nukes Iraq really is. Where the hell does anyone get the idea that Saddam Hussein would willfully hand weapons of mass destruction over to terrorists? He's a friggin' megalomaniac who's hated by most religious fanatics. Duh. Oh, christ on a crutch. "We can't wait for the smoking gun, which might come in the form of a mushroom cloud." Take another hit, George, you're not near high enough to deliver that line with the dignity it deserves. So he's saying that sanctions didn't work - strange, I don't see Iraq nuking Tel Aviv right now - think the inspectors might have something to do with that? Plus, his "problems" with the inspectors are largely addressed by the most recent UN resolutions. I can't fucking believe this. We're seriously going to war for no real obvious reason. A bloody idiot alcoholic is about to send this whole country down the shitter to keep people from realizing that his entire administration is corrupt and owned by the energy industry. Sure, that's a little exaggeration, but it's not near as bald-faced a lie as what this man is spouting. Now he's dictating new terms for a UN resolution, after saying how the UN can't do anything. I'm expecting him to add "Saddam Hussein must say 'she sells seashells by the seashore' fifty times fast while rubbing his belly and patting his head". "...or in the interests of peace, a coalition must go and disarm him." Or what I heard him saying - "...or in the interests of peace, we must go to war." Hmm...many of the same absurdist requirements he brought up at the UN. Where's the deadline? It's the next step. OK, I don't even have a clue what the point of the last bit was - calling on Iraqi generals to not follow orders? Does he really think that'll work? And now he's threatening war crimes trials. You too, buddy. Waiting is the riskiest of all options? Jesus CHRIST. Either Bush is an idiot on a truly cosmic scale, or he's just lying. Or both. Oh, he's not willing to risk one American life by trusting Saddam Hussein - I'm not willing to risk one American life by trusting G. Dub. I love watching him look over at the teleprompter - he has about a three sentence memory capacity before his brain runs out. Did anyone else see the polls showing that a majority of Americans think we shouldn't go in without international support? That we should wait and be sure of what we're doing? He just bungled Afghanistan hard. Oh, and called Hussein a student of Stalin. Which is it? Is he Baby Hitler or Baby Stalin? Where does Kim Il Sung, the Hennessey Cognac-swigging, American movie-watching Stalinist in North Korea, fit in to this equation? Ok, so NOW we start interfering in other countries because of the nasty stuff they do to their own citizens? We're done supporting countries that do that? Like, y'know, Chile? I know, thirty years ago, but a lot of what Bush just attacked Hussein for doing to dissidents and political prisoners sounds a LOT like what was done in Chile with our support. Bush has asked Congress to give him permission to go to war to enforce UN Security Council demands - it'd be nice if we HAD THOSE DEMANDS FIRST. I need to say this loudly - SEPTEMBER 11TH HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IRAQ. IT IS OFFENSIVE TO THE VICTIMS AND SURVIVORS TO IMPLY THAT 9/11 GIVES US PERMISSION TO INVADE IRAQ. He's just babbling now - and I think he just quoted "I Can See Clearly Now". Something about leading the world to a "bright, bright, bright sun-shiney day." Or something like that. Bah. Off to call Mom and throw a fit over this bullshit. |

Arianna Huffington. No one in the Bush administration is talking about how many of our soldiers will be sent home in body bags. [Salon Headlines] Good freakin' point. I know this is a major concern for me - but it doesn't seem to matter to our administration. |

Bush: Time running out for Iraq. President George W Bush is set to make a speech warning Saddam Hussein to disarm Iraq or face a US-led coalition. [BBC News | WORLD] Of course, what he actually means is disarm Iraq or we'll show up and invade even sooner. |

Tory readers avoid digesting Currie's spice. Politics: Edwina Currie was today losing the battle of the books at the Tory conference as her diaries went on sale alongside Ann Widdecombe's second novel. [Guardian Unlimited] Heh. Y'see, that's a pun - Currie's spice, curry spice...it's funny. What? I got a kick out of it. =) |

Giants-Braves Game 5 preview. Or the Braves. Russ Ortiz pitching on full rest is as sure a thing as anything in the playoffs so far. That is: Not very sure. [Salon Headlines] I'm definitely rooting for the Giants here. For one thing, Barry's one of the two greatest players in baseball history to never win a World Series (along with Ted Williams). Second, that'd mean that the four teams in the Championship Series would be three teams that weren't even in the playoffs last year and the St. Louis Cardinals. This is a Good Thing. |

Anti-war protesters rally across US [BBC World] Did yesterday's protests get any coverage at all in the States? I've seen nothing in the Times or Post RSS feeds. Oh, and Daschle sold out yesterday - he said that he'd vote for the first strike resolution. Bush, in his weekly radio address, said that war might be unavoidable - am I the only one who finds that kind of surreal? Obviously we're going to war - we've all known that for months. But Bush sometimes claims that things aren't certain, and then the rest of the time says that things ARE certain. Huh? |

Angered by U.S., Palestinians Act on Jerusalem [New York Times: International News] oh crap - I hadn't heard anything about this. The newest State Department appropriations bill has a clause in it that says that no money can be spent on official US documents that list Israel without calling Jerusalem its capital. Oh great... |
