posted by tsarfan at November 11 4:26 PM. Karyn has been saved. Her $20k debit has been paid off thanks to her website. 18 months of buying crap at department stores with credit cards were paid off even though her web site wasn't fancy, her story wasn't all that tragic, and many found it hard to sympathize with her . so what have we learned? is this a success story? is this another fine example of the web wielding it's magic? or will this open a can of worms for the next jackass who overspends and hopes the society will pay for their ills? I've got a nasty debt myself - a couple thousand to a credit card, three thousand to my college to get my dgree out of hock, another seventeen thousand or so in college loans..and so what? I don't want anyone's help. I don't need anyone's help. And I sure as hell don't DESERVE anyone's help. Whenever I saw someone talking about giving money to Karyn or a Karyn-alike, I wanted to scream at them - if you want to make a difference, why not give it to someone who needs it? Why not give your ten bucks to AIDS research? To your local battered womens shelter? What the hell?

I've bad-mouthed Paul Pierce plenty so far this season - he's just not a great shooter. He's a *good* shooter, but he's had a nasty tendency to really, really suck for the first half of a game. However, he's been amazing for the last few games - tonight, 35 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds, 50% shooting from the field, 3 steals, 3 blocks. Against Minnesota on Saturday - 20 points, 10 assists, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks. He's averaging 25.2 points, over five assists a game, six and a half rebounds...he's passing with style. It's great to watch.

Hey - look! Garbage time! Celtics have a 21 point lead with less than two minutes to go. In come the scrubs for both teams. Ah, a beautiful thing to see your team WINNING in garbage time. =) That's five in a row for my boys. I was getting a little worried after the Washington game (shuddup, Bruce! We'll see you again in January!) but DAMN have they come together since then. Quality defense, and a near-dominant offense. This is basketball the way I like it.

Just got U2's Elevation 2001: Live in Boston DVD in from Netflix. Watching it reminds me of seeing them in Providence last year on Halloween - still maybe the most amazing performance I've ever seen. Sunday Bloody Sunday was particularly cathartic, along with the WTC victims' names, the same thing they did at the Super Bowl. InTENSE. I've seen both U2 and the Stones in big arena environments - and these days, U2 blows the Stones out of the water. I can't wait for them to release another album, so that I can see them in concert again.

Democrats consider Boston for convention. Cape Cod Online Nov 11 2002 1:21PM ET [Moreover - Boston news]

Oh goodie! It'll be easier for me to show up and picket whoever the distasteful and useless nominee is... =)

Saddam urged to reject resolution. World latest: Iraq's parliament tonight condemned a UN resolution on resuming weapons inspections and a leading member of the body urged its rejection. [Guardian Unlimited]

Now this is interesting - does this mean that Hussein is going to reject it? Or is he trying to make himself look benevolent and generous by going against his puppet parliament?

For the last couple months, my Radio installation has been brutalized by a truly horrendous memory leak of some sort. I've asked for help with this over at the Radio discussion boards at Userland, but all I've ever heard from the Userland powers-that-be is "email your configuration" and "compact your data files". I never got anything in the way of a useful response to emailing my configuration, and no matter how I compact my data files, uninstall tools, turn on or off upstreaming, etc, even reinstall Radio, I still have massive memory problems. I'm on Windows 2000 Professional, and it seems to jump up a dozen or two Kbytes every 10 seconds or so. Does anyone have any actual suggestions as to how to fix this? I know it's not just me - plenty of people have posted messages about this kind of problem, and gotten the same response I have, or none at all. Is Radio even QA tested on Win2k? In fact, I've heard that the problems are even worse on XP. Please, don't suggest that I should compact my data files, turn off upstreaming, uninstall tools, or any of the things that have already been said five times over. I love Radio, but this makes it so that I can only have Radio running if I'm not trying to do anything else, which is completely unacceptable.

Hub-to-Montreal rail initiative gets rolling. Boston Herald Nov 11 2002 2:08AM ET [Moreover - Boston news]

It seems that the Boston-Montreal corridor has been named a "high speed rail corridor" or somesuch - they're going to try to reopen the rail route with 90mph trains, so that the whole trip would take approximately 4 hours. Ooooh...I'm loving this idea - anything that makes it easier for me get to Montreal is a good thing.

For Eminem the Movie Star, a Profitable Opening Weekend. "8 Mile," the debut film of Eminem, the rap star, made an estimated $54.5 million in a surprising and triumphant opening weekend. By Rick Lyman. [New York Times: Movies]

It's getting to the point where every third movie or so makes $30 million or more in their first weekend. Is this all a product of the increasing ticket prices or are more people going to the movies?

Not that I'm complaining, but wasn't Futurama cancelled? I'm very happy about it NOT being cancelled, but I'm sure I heard that it was. Am I just nuts?

In case anyone's interested, I just got back from my second date with the girl I mentioned a week ago. And it went quite well. I'm sure some of you will be happy to know that we did NOT go to Bickfords again - we went out for Indian, to a great place in Lexington, MA and then to Bowling for Columbine. Good movie, great date. She's really, really cool. I'm all kinds of dazed - I'm *dating*. I mean, I've NEVER dated. I've been in relationships, sure, but not dated. I'm liking this dating thing. =)
