I just had a truly geeky idea. I've got a Neuros audio player, I've got this here weblog...wouldn't it be nifty if I could have Radio post the song I'm currently listening to here? It's not actually very feasible, sadly - the Neuros doesn't have wifi or bluetooth, so there's pretty much no way of getting the info from the Neuros to the computer. But damn, it'd be nifty... |

Argh. I'm supposed to spend some time with Arwen tonight, but today's a madhouse around here...I've got something like 4 hours of work to cram into the next two, if I want to actually see her. Worst thing is that I'm on call this week but this is all happening while I'm still here, so I won't even get paid extra for it. Argh. |

Vietnam comparisons becoming more apt. These are the sort of headlines that make Karl Rove and the Neocons sweat: Monthly costs of Iraq, Afghan wars... [Daily Kos] Ouch. With inflation adjustments, Vietnam had a price tag of $5.15 billion a month. Iraq alone is up to $4 billion a month. Meaning that yeah, this is definitely Vietnamlike, in costs if nothing else. |

Convergence.. Wild-eyed left-wing foreigner Ken MacLeod, blogging before the speech: It looks like a line change, and possibly an Inner Party... [Electrolite] Waitasecond - Ken MacLeod has a blog? MacLeod rules - my favorite anarchosocialist space opera writer working today. =) |

The unpalatable taste of realism. Comment: George's Bush's triumphalism over Iraq has disappeared and well it might, writes Mark Tran, as in economic terms the task ahead is huge. [Guardian Unlimited] 'Terrorists' overshadowing Iraq progress: Straw. Politics: Jack Straw is accused of allowing Britain to be 'sucked into a Vietnam-type vortex' as he briefs MPs on the current situation there. [Guardian Unlimited] A couple interesting articles from the Guardian... |

Aiding and Abetting. I suppose I should be honored that Donald Rumsfeld thinks my Mighty Blog has the power to change the course of world events, but frankly I'm getting a little tired of being told I'm a traitor and that I'm responsible for getting our troops killed by the guys who created this whole mess in the first place. Yeah, this is pretty fucked up right here. Donald Rumsfeld is a hateful little bastard and should be hounded out of public life - of course, he's just one of many such jackasses in this administration. After all, haven't we heard similar shit from Ari Fleischer and John Ashcroft, among others? |

Thank God for 9/11. Fred Phelps visits Manhattan. [Eschaton] Oh, ewwww. It doesn't get much worse (or more pathetic) than Fred Phelps and his eager gang of morons. Half of them showed up at Oberlin College while I was there...frankly, they were great. Brought the whole campus together in opposition - there were live bands, a kissing booth across the street from the Phelpsians, some street theater, a lot of support from the College administration and the town... Phelps himself didn't show up - he was off protesting MLK's kid or something like that. Those people are such tasteless shitheads that I honestly have trouble understanding how their brains work. Michael Moore ridiculed them pretty well in an episode of the Awful Truth, if I remember correctly... But there is something even more despicable than normal to showing up and having their little hate rally in front of Harvey Milk High School, the alternative sexuality school in NYC. It's not quite up there with picketing Matthew Shepard's funeral, but still. If you're in the NYC area, consider heading down to Harvey Milk for when school lets out around 3. Show the kids they've got your support. |

I love the CNN.com headline today - "Bush wants billions". Uh, ok. Somebody was a little too focused on the alliteration there... Speaking of those billions - I heard some discussion about how we're going to, y'know, PAY those billions on the Beeb this morning. An economist pointed out that that $87 billion amounts to something like 0.75% of the entire gross national product of the United States - which doesn't seem that much, until you remember that we spend, oh, $500 MILLION on public education each year, if I remember correctly. That's not good, I think. Oh, and we're going to have to borrow that $87 billion, since we're cutting taxes everywhere. Next year's deficit is predicted to be somewhere around $500 BILLION. Enjoy those low interest rates while you still can. |
