So I was watching "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" last night (the Chuck Barris story), and the quote "All the information I have about myself is from forged documents" was attributed to Vladimir Nabokov.
Since it's a great quote, a million people have put it on their web pages. The only problem is that I don't believe he ever said it. It just doesn't sound right.
I'm not saying he didn't say something like that in something he wrote; I'm saying he didn't say exactly that.
One of the funny things about literary quotes is that people rarely quote the source material anymore; it's usually a secondhand source, like one of those quote volumes for writers, a movie, or (god forbid) a bumper sticker. Therefore, the meaning is usually horribly distorted from the original intention.
However, oftentimes, the 'new' meaning is more meaningful to people in general than the original intention, so that's not such a bad thing.
If anyone can verify that alledged Nabokov quote, I'd be grateful.
