Re: Monterey Breakwater
The acquisition of a brand new Bare 7mm Arctic jumpsuit-vest combo and an overwhelming anxiety over the plummeting value of the dollar prompted a dive trip to the Monterey breakwater this weekend.
The water was still and very clear. Everything was out this weekend: we saw a school of saltwater bass, tons of rockfish, tons of tube anemones, two Ling cod, and got fly-by’d by at least one sea lion. However, the real treats were a bat ray with about a three-foot wingspan, several live abalones (once plentiful and delicious, the abalone population has been decimated by the introduction of the non-native sea otter several years ago), and several nudibranchs.
Nudibranchs, or “nudies”, are very fancy sea slugs that are prized by divers for their beautiful shapes and colors. We were lucky enough to spot two Lemon nudies, a ton of white curlicue-looking things, and a really spectacular Spanish Shawl nudie.
