My cousin Matt has been in town, and I've been taking him on the surf-and-skate tour of the Bay Area.
Now, back to business:
Megan asked how I feel about the bizarre protest against France and French things by Congress.
All I can say is that I’m nonplussed. I don’t know what to think.
Apparently, nobody reads Orwell anymore, or they’d know this is exactly the type of thing they did in 1984. Also, nobody studies macroeconomics anymore, or they’d know that this type of thing has a direct bearing on the value of the dollar in the global marketplace. The last time I checked, we were in a freaking huge recession (gas price spotted in El Cajon, CA: an unbelievable $4.25 for a gallon of premiums). Hey, remember that? Maybe not, since everyone in Congress has a job by definition.
Regardless of what anyone’s feelings are on Iraq (and nobody who knows me would accuse me of being fond of the French), there’s a reason we call how we deal with other countries “diplomacy”. It’s because we need things from them, and we have to be clever and nice to get them to give them to us, even if they’re not nice to us. I learned this in kindergarten, and then I re-learned it when I went into consulting.
