Re: More Milwaukee

Midwesterners are fascinating. They’re like magical cheese-making, beer-drinking forest people.

Now, before you go and accuse me of “city slicker”-ism again, let me say that I’ve spent most of my life on the US coasts (California mostly, with a lot of time in Texas, Virginia, and Maryland), and not much time in the middle of the country. For those of you who think that’s the same thing, let me just remind you that there are two (maybe three) major metropoli in California, and the rest of it is about 100,000 square miles of desert, farmland, and mountains.

(Fun Facts: According to this site, the US (all inclusive) is about 3.5 million square miles, which means that California makes up about 5% of the entire area, Texas makes up 8%, and Alaska makes up a whopping 18%. In comparison, New York State makes up about 1.5%, Massachusetts is 0.02%, and Washington DC is 0.000019%.).

In short, I have had to turn off a paved road and push a cow out of the way a few times in my life.

That being said, I just saw an ad for a shop that sells and installs indoor-outdoor carpet.

This is carpet that you can put in your house (say, in a finished basement or “rumpus room”), or out on your porch. Literally, outdoor carpet.

I have only seen this once in my life, when I was visiting my dad’s side of the family in Wichita, KS when I was 12, so I know this isn’t a rare, specialized product. People in this part of the country have a mysterious drive to carpet the outside areas of their houses.

(Evil tech lead just came by again. He’s still really cute, which means that yesterday’s infatuation wasn’t the result of lack of sleep, jet lag, and caffeine overdosing as I was hoping.)
