Re: Sea Line Invasion!
Beej and I went diving this weekend at the Monterey Breakwater.
Sea lion cub season has brought a population explosion. There was a sign posed on the parking payment machine that said "Boat Ramp Closed - sea line invasion". I assume they meant "sea lion invasion". The boat ramp is covered with sunbathing little guys.
An adult sea lion is about five and a half feet long and about 200- 300 pounds. The young ones are about the size of a medium dog - two and a half feet long and about 50 - 70 pounds. The babies are tiny, about the size of large cats. They were all draped along the breakwater.
There were lots of other babies out, too. Baby halibut were everywhere, as were baby moon jellyfish and some kind of baby stinging jellyfish. We ended the dive when they were getting a little too plentiful around our unprotected faces.
