I feel pretty good today.
A sudden change of plans this weekend meant that I could go with Beej to spend the weekend with his family in Grass Valley, CA. It's an old gold mining town that has a certain "weekend crowd" atmosphere. The downtown is full of old bookstores and art galleries, that sort of thing. It gave me a lot of time to reflect.
I have spent a great deal of my time constructing my life to give me room to be the person I am, despite the tremendous pressure from family and collegues to live up to their standards and expectations. You just can't live your life for other people completely. Ask any gay person who's been in the closet. This causes not just a tremendous amount of pain for yourself, but for the people who are close to you. Ask any gay person who's dated someone in the closet.
No matter what I lose along the way, I'll always have my freedom to be true to myself and the power to get what I need out of life. Anyone who doesn't have that is infintely worse off than I am.
