Re: Geeks are from Mars, Yuppies are from Uranus
Despite the fact that I'm preparing to leave all my friends, my job, and the country that I love, I'm in a very good mood.
I'm currently casting off the messed-up Bay Area yuppie tech industry mind-f*** that I have been wallowing in for the past five years.
Things I no longer care or feel self-conscious about:
- I drive (and hold title on) a Japanese sub-compact economy car
- I wear non-designer clothes bought at discount stores
- I read comic books and science fiction novels
- I don't live "on the Peninsula" or "in the City"
- I don't particularly like tapas (too greasy)
- I usually make my coffee and tea at home instead of buying it at Starbucks
- I buy used books
- I write in a $0.99 composition book from Walgreens, not a $10 leather-bound journal from Barnes & Noble
- I own almost nothing from Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, or Restoration Hardware
- I don't have DSL, wi-fi, or Bluetooth, and neither does my PDA
- The last vacation I took was to visit my parents in Washington DC for Easter
- My favorite restaurant is a greasy spoon/ former medical marijuana club where none of the dishes match and a hippie named Ned cooks vegetarian fare with names like "The Holy-Moly Frijole Bowl" which is served by a Goth electronic musician named Charlie and a conspiracy-theorist named Dave.
All the conspicuously-consuming, debt-ridden, "Sex in the City"-worshipping Gap addicts can kiss my butt.
And one more thing:
Sometimes, I like eating at Chevy's, Chili's, and sometimes even El Torito!
