Beej thinks this looks like me.

He would, god bless him. :)

Re: The Pirates of the Carribbean

I really liked this movie.

I thought I was going to hate it since it's based on a theme-park ride (a Disney theme park ride, the most evil kind). But it was actually pretty good, due not in small part to the talents and dedication of Johnny Depp (who, as a man in his 40's, should consider dropping the "Johnny").

Now, if there's one thing in the world Beej knows about, it's pirates. Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow had quite a few elements of realism.

For example, pirates tended to make radical fashion statements. They lived by a very liberal code (by the standards of the day), and therefore, made natural-born Americans. Indeed, we have a lot of pirates to thank for the founding of this country: the College of William and Mary was founded with pirate...er, I mean, PRIVATEER money.

As a matter of fact, a lot of people who found difficulty living within the stringent rules of society found themselves involved in piracy at some point. There were a few women who sailed under the black flag, although they weren't exactly shrinking violets: Sadie the Goat was a river pirate/gang leader from Lower Manhattan's Fourth Ward, and Cheng I Sao turned to piracy to escape a life of prostitution.
