Re: weekend
Beej, I, and a whole group of friends spent the weekend camping in Lava Beds National Monument. It's a yearly thing people in our group do, but I only occasionally come along.
The reason for this is that it's far away (near Klamath Falls, OR), and hot (in the middle of the high desert), and filthy (the campground doesn't have showers). However, with my impending move, I came along this time to spend some time with friends.
The reason people go to such a place is that there is an extensive cavern system formed by ancient lava flows (hence the name). Beej and his friends like crawling around in them. I don't, mostly because my skin isn't as abrasion-resistant then theirs is. I enjoy the charms of Medicine Lake and Glass Mountain, which, as the name suggests, is a mountain made of volcanic glass (obsidian).
Mostly, though, I like to hang around in the campgound and drink. For some reason, a friend of ours brings an absurd amount of alcohol along. Two years ago, I drank most of his vodka, and this year, I drank about a third of another friend's rum.
I will say that there's nothing better than a Stolichnaya Pertsovka (pepper vodka) and V8 in the morning on a hot desert day.
