Re: Friendster
Everyone seems to be into Friendster nowadays. I just recently was invited to join up, after resisting for a long long time, and now I'm surprised at how many people I already know are on it.
Friendster is basically a networking site where one gets one's friends to sign up. It's a little like match.com, but you are only allowed access to the friends of your friends (of your friends, etc).
I currently have over 48000 people in my personal network, which is mostly due to a few very socially active friends.
Beej is interested in the "six degrees of seperation" aspect: he wants to know how many people we don't know personally are linked back to him through completely disparate friends. He's already found at least one circular tree.
I'm mostly interested in how much of themselves people can actually capture in their profiles, which include lists of favorites, description of one's self, description of people you'd like to meet, etc.
Most people are pretty bad at it. "I'm a nice person with a good personality looking for other nice people to have fun with." Yeah, that narrows it down.
Then, there are the other people. My friend Ben used a police mugshot as his photo and listed his occupation as "Magician". I swear, he's a chick magnet.
