iPod 1.2 "Feature"

The iPod 1.2 firmware has a nice feature which ignores a leading "The" in band names. So the band, The Damned is listed as "Damned" and sorted amongst bands that start with a "D".

That's all good but the software also operates on multiple languages. It treats the Spanish word "de" (of) as a word to be ignored. So bands like De La Soul get sorted under "L". Luckily it only ignores the first word, or "De La Soul" would be listed as only "Soul" after "La" (the) would get chopped too.

No reports on where the band The The is listed because none of the three people who still listen to "The The" own an iPod.

Digicam Fun

Following my usual pattern of staying way behind the current edge of technology, I finally got my first digital camera this week. It's a FujiFilm FinePix A201. Nice price (under $200), recommended by Sumi Das on Fresh Gear so how could I resist?

Here are a couple shots I took, scaled down from 1600x1200. My street in DUMBO, Brooklyn, that's the Manhattan Bridge in the background. The Brooklyn Bridge taken from the pier. My cat being cute. My cat being pissed (actually she's yawning, but she looks pissed).

Speaking of the Brooklyn Bridge and cameras. Every time I walk over said bridge, it never fails. Some tourist asks me to take their picture. It's always me. A half-dozen people can walk by but they always pick me. It's not that I mind taking their picture, I actually enjoy it. I am just wondering what it is about me that comes off as "the only trustworthy looking New Yorker".

If Computers Were Cars

I was thinking about an analogy Eric posted, comparing Linux servers to tractor trailers and I came up with some of my own.

  • If Linux servers are tractor trailers, Windows servers are gasoline trucks. They seem stable, but one crash and they burn down everything around them.
  • Linux workstations are Volvos (ugly yet rock-solid).
  • Dells are Hondas.
  • Gateways are Toyotas.
  • Macs are BMWs.
  • iMacs are Beetles.
  • Gaming PCs are souped-up Mustangs.
  • Overclocker's PCs are Formula racers (fast but always ready to crash and burn).
  • PCs with windowed sides are ricers.
