Tablet PC - A Flop?

I was just watching a piece on The Screen Savers about Microsoft's Tablet PC. This is Bill Gates' first major product released under his direct supervision since stepping down from CEO to be Chief Software Architect.

Basically, after reading the trade sites this week and seeing the piece on The Screen Savers it looks like the Tablet PC is a flop. The main problem is that Microsoft is pushing it on the consumer market. Huge mistake. The Tablet PC is good for doctors and UPS drivers, not for us everyday folks.

The handwriting recognition looks horrendous. The demo on TSS was laughable at best. Writing the name "Patrick" translated to something like "Slxtraz" -- horrible.

The only reason this thing got released is because Bill Gates himself thinks it's a good idea. It's the classic case of peon workers being afraid to tell the boss that his idea sucks. It's the same exact reason we had to suffer with Star Wars: Episode One.

The funny thing is that this product will never get any better. Most Microsoft products usually fall into shape around version 3. Unless major leaps are made in the field of handwriting recognition in the next few years I don't see the Tablet PC taking off. Aside from lousy recognition, who wants to input with a pen when a keyboard is way, way faster? Give me a slick little notebook anyday.

Nice try Bill. At least Bob is soon going to have company in Microsoft's junk drawers.
