Is Anyone Even From New York?
Morgan's entry yesterday got me thinking that most, if not all, of the people I know who live in Manhattan are from somewhere else originally. Be it as close as the surrounding boroughs or Connecticut, to plain across the country and overseas. Off the top of my head I can’t remember meeting many people born and raised in Manhattan. I'm a New Yorker all my life but I sure as hell am not from Manhattan (Westchester by way of the Bronx).
I came to the conclusion that most of the people who were actually born there a) are really rich and I would never run into them b) are really poor and I would never run into them c) got sick of city life a long time ago and left.
It's funny because everyone seems to pretend they are from New York. When you call them on it, "You're not from NYC your from East Bumblefuck", they always jump back with, "Yeah but I have been here X years." I don't see the big deal, we are all poseurs in this city and a bunch of elitist snobs at that.
