What's Up in New York Night Life Now That Lizzie Grubman Is Incarcerated?

Though not quite Balthazar, the Metro Diner on Broadway and 100th seemed to serve Lisa L. just fine as a base of operations this evening. Sitting in a booth near the front, using her cell phone and her outside voice, she left messages for all and sundry, inviting them to her party at Sessa Wednesday. She seemed very proud that she had gotten the owner to allow her an unlimited guest list, and wanted to let everyone know (including the guy she ended up in a back room "partying" with--at least that's how she remembered it--at a Halloween party to which she went dressed as a witch or a schoolgirl--that she couldn't remember).

If Lisa forgot to invite you, don't feel bad. Just call her cell phone at (323) 974-2855 to have her put you on the list (after all, it's unlimited), and drop by anytime after 10:30 on 23rd Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. I know I'll be there.

What Did I Learn on My Fall Vacation?

  • I learned that (much to my surprise) my brother claims not to fear death, but that he acknowledges that he really fears the people who run his rehab program.

  • I learned that my brother is just beginning to realize how bright he is.

  • I learned that his being so bright makes his addiction a much more difficult problem to solve.

  • I learned that rehab programs don't care about smoking, even though it's more addictive and toxic than pretty much anything else.

  • I learned that getting yourself sane and healthy only makes you more aware of the insane and unhealthy state of the rest of your family.

  • I learned that my father preferred to watch the sun set at Long Nook Beach in Truro, which faces east, because depressed as he was, he would rather watch darkness emerge from the seemingly endless expanse of the Atlantic Ocean than watch the sun paint the sky spectacular colors as a promise to return in the morning.

  • I learned that even when the temperature is in the thirties, when "The Loco-Motion" is on the radio in Provincetown, it's summer.

  • I learned that Provincetown will heal whatever ails you, though it may not always do so gently.

  • I learned that it doesn't actually take all that much effort to have a real effect on other people's lives--more so the closer they are to you.
