When Will Notre Dame Football Just Go Away?
The world of college football fans can safely be divided into those who root for Notre Dame and those who would like to see their team plane disappear on a return trip. There's the hypocritical sanctimony of their fans, reflected for instance in their referring to their games against Miami as "the Catholics versus the convicts." There's the fact that they are so proud of being Catholic while no player of note on the team has been Catholic for decades. There's all of the Irish blarney crap, despite the fact that the school was founded in the French Jesuit tradition. There's the "Touchdown Jesus." But more than anything, there's the fact that every game is played like a modern version of a Greek myth, once again confusing the trappings of ancient and Catholic mythology.
