Is Panther All That?
I spent the whole day yesterday upgrading my and my wife's computers to Panther. My wife's upgrade, which I did as a simple upgrade, went quickly and smoothly. For mine, I backed up everything I could think of to CD-R, erased my hard drive, and did it as a clean install. The back-up took forever, and I forgot a few things, but the actual install was, of course, simple. The restoration of my data from the back-ups took the rest of the day (including a few tricks because I forgot to back up my Radio UserLand data--that was exciting). When I was done it was like getting a new computer. With everything restored, I regained about one gigabyte of hard drive space; my computer is definitely faster and more responsive; and, for reasons that I can't begin to fathom, my Airport reception has improved dramatically. And because I'm still using Palm Desktop 4.0 (instead of the current 4.1 version), I haven't even been afflicted with the dreaded Palm sync nightmare. From my perspective, this is a great upgrade. For all of you still fighting with that archaic mess known as Windows, it's time to improve your life.
