A very cool Weblog that you've probably already noticed, filchyboy by John the Maiden. Geez, now that's personal. He is writing a diary to his kid to help explain why he and his wife separated and the whole situation, his feelings, etc. I thought my blog was personal, but I realized it is not. This guy's is personal. I guess Rama the cama is a mean lil bugger! They say maybe because he's lonely.   3:27:26 PM    comment [] So there's a new approach to return-on-investment (ROI) for information technology (IT). (Boredom alert - I really am going to talk about this so if you'd rather cross-breed camels with llamas than hear about ROI for IT, stop here.) It's called real options or IT portfolios. It is based on the premise that reduction of risk should be a key factor in IT investment. Just like with financial investment, companies should have several IT strategies at once, and keep what works from each. This definitely applies to large companies, but I think even small ($10M and up) companies could benefit from this mindset shift. Currently, in IT, we think of IT ROI as "I put this much into this project, I better get X more than I put in." But that doesn't always work very well. What is the direct payback from an e-mail system? Real options says it makes sense to have several plans and keep them going as long as you're seeing benefits from them. Then be prepared to merge projects once it becomes clear that one is superior or that two approaches could complement each other. Actually, the same goes for business plans. People are valuing companies now based on their reduced risk through multiple business plans, depending on what happens (stock market, Enron, oil crisis, whatever). This is so smart, but I am sure that it will take years to infiltrate into IT departments around the world. You heard it here first! (Maybe you did.)   3:22:06 PM    comment [] I think this network spinal analysis is working. I started treatment two weeks ago for a stiff neck, which happened when I was working out. I heard my shoulder clicking each time I did a rep of bent-over row. The next day I could barely turn my head to the left side. I checked around for a chiropractor who was close and found Dr. Brian Foltz, a network chiropractor. Well, whatever, just crack me and get it over with. No no, said Brian, I don't do that cracking stuff. This is network chiropractic, or network spinal analysis. No cracking? Okay, I'll give it a try. I signed up for four weeks of treatments. The treatments are strange, to say the least. Brian just puts his thumb across the base of my neck or the base of my spine and kind of strums my spinal cord. Doing! Then he watches me for a few seconds to see reactions. I don't know what reactions I give him, I don't think any. A few times in each spot, a few pauses, and we're done in about five minutes. "Come back tomorrow!" Hmmm. Seems weird but I'm staying open minded. Then my neck gets better! I know, I know, it's just coincidence. But isn't it strange that I left it alone for five days and it got worse every day, and then the day THE DAY I started with Brian it started to subside. Coincidence, maybe, but I have a very tough time with coincidences that perfect. So, any, I accidentally found another type of holistic healer and I'm happy.
