Halfway Harry Potter

Halfway and going strong...

Harry Potter 5 - the third radio interview

Just finished a fifteen minute interview with an Australian radio station. Once again, I refused to give any spoilers but had a good chat about various things.

As it happens, my first radio interview can be heard online at: http://www.abc.net.au/brisbane/stories/s883106.htm

(Despite what the teaser on that site says, I don't reveal anything about the plot.)

[Update: The first interview has been replaced by the longer 12 minute third interview at the same link.]

What I will and won't say about Harry Potter

Don't ask me for any plot details, spoilers, quotes or anything like that. I'm going to respect the embargo on specific details of the story and all my comments are based on impressions I get from reading the book rather than being specific reports on the details. (This is primarily because I am hearing about lawsuits being filed, etc.)

More Harry Potter interviews

Just done another radio interview - for ABC Radio Newcastle this time... and in two hours I have another lined up with ABC Radio Brisbane... busy times... and I've only had a chance to read the frist 300 pages amongst everything else.

Harry Potter embargo fever

I've just given a couple of interviews about having a copy of the Harry Potter book. USA Today is incredibly excited about the embargo break and they are planning to run a story tomorrow.

I also gave a radio interview for ABC (Australia) where I used to work and chatted about the type of book this volume is.

Following the allegory for the fascistic tendencies of government that we are seeing in the US (and other countries), there is a strong implied comment about a particular style of education whereby so-called "experts" dictate a school curriculum that has nothing to do with the real world. The type of education imposed by the extreme government proposes education as a means for passing exams, not as for coping in the real world or for being useful in any way whatsoever.

Given all the interest in the book, I might have a full review of the book available as soon as the embargo lifts... let's say 12.01am on Saturday...

Harry Potter embargo breaks

So far, there have been reported a handful of embargo breaks for the Harry Potter 5 book. These include a Walmart in Canada that did it by accident, a health food store in Brooklyn, NY, that didn't know about the embargo and you'll read in tomorrow's USA Today about the Washington, D.C. area embargo break...

More news at:

Montreal Gazette (about the Walmart break)

Toronto Globe and Mail/Associated Press (the Brooklyn break)

Harry Potter and the Evils of Conservative Government

I've only had a chance to read the first 150 pages or so of Harry Potter 5 (on my bus ride to work this morning), but once it again, it looks like it is tackling ideas not usually discussed in children's fiction.

I read one of the first issues to arise as an allegory for what is happening in the US Administration and legal system. e.g. the official ruling body seems to be using the courts to its own ends, flouting laws when it thinks it can get away with it, using its power to subvert justice, has secret hearings biased against defendants on trumped up charges and relying on marginal interpretations of the law if it serves it own purposes.
