1913: Birth of Wolfgang Paul, physicist well known for inventing a device (the Paul trap) that contains ions and electrons for precise study. He received the Nobel Prize in 1989.
1889: Discovery of a mammoth skeleton, 36 feet long and 15 feet high in St James, Nebraska
1846: US Congress founded the Smithsonian Institution
1675: King Charles II laid the foundation stone of the Greenwich Observatory
