Can you hear me now? People no longer listen to outgoing voice mail messages. Either that or the number of severely hearing impaired people using telephones has risen alarmingly.
How do I know this? Because the message on my home office phone right now says that I'm on vacation for the next few weeks and that anyone with an urgent need to talk should instead phone my editor. And I even give that phone number.
Does it stop people from leaving messages? No, of course not. At least two a day end up there.
What are these people doing when my recorded voice is prattling on at great length about not leaving me a message? Humming to themselves? Spinning their cell phone on a bar room table to see who pays for the next round of drinks? Suffering from a coughing fit?
Now, of course, the bigger question is why am I checking the messages in the first place?
Maybe the people who ignore the outgoing message are on to something.
