Re: Spirited Away finally opened at my town
| Kat D: |
|
Wow! After all these months? You must live in Sacramento. |
| |
| Charly: |
No, not even close. Why, is Sacramento that bad? |
| |
| Kat D: |
"Bad" is a relative term. Sac is bad compared to, say, Carmel, but good compared to, say, Waco, Texas. Uh... I sure hope you don't live anywhere near West Texas. |
| |
| Charly: |
Pfft! Don't worry, you're still off by several miles. |
| |
| Paula: |
That movie sounds great; I can't wait to see it now! I'm thinking that I'll have to wait until it is released on DVD, though. Hey, one question: is it material for children or not? Mine are ages 8 and 6. |
| |
| Charly: |
Oh, it is kid friendly. Maybe one or two moments can be a little scary, but nothing major. |

Re: Some movies I saw during the last 3 weeks
| Kat D: |
|
I loved Confessions, but I can't believe you went to see Maid in Manhattan. |
| |
| Charly: |
To be honest, I went see Maid just because I think Jennifer Lopez is nice to look at. |
| |
| Kat D: |
OK, but wouldn't it be nice to see a Spanish woman in a role that didn't involve domestic servitude? |
| |
| Charly: |
Well, I also went see Frida... |
| |
| Kat D: |
That's what I'm talking about! Salma Hayek is to J. Lo what Monte Carlo is to Las Vegas. |
| |
| Charly: |
And I can agree it'd be nice to see more Latin American women in roles other than domestics; still, that doesn't change the fact that there are way too many such women actually doing domestic work for a living. |
| |
| Kat D: |
Yes, there are a lot, but image is reality; if the media portrays Latin women as maids, the public thinks of Latin women as maids or so my theory goes. Notice you don't see too many African American women as maids in the media anymore. |
| |
| Charly: |
Hmm... (Takes in the thought.) |
| |
| Kat D: |
Tangentially, this calls to mind an old Chris Rock routine about how the lower you are on the socio-economic strata, the better boxer you tend to be. Then he goes through the champs over the years and how certain ethnicities were phased out as a whole as they rose: Irish, Italian, African-American, Hispanic. Then he says the Hispanics better watch out, because somewhere out there are a bunch of Native Americans waiting to kick their asses. |
| |
| Charly: |
Yeah, he's right. Though I think a bunch of Asians are going to kick butt in the lighter weight categories. |
| |
| Daniel: |
Charly, thanks for pointing out which movie I can take my mother to. My wife and I FUBARed twice by taking her to that modern day remake of Dangerous Liasons with the Buffy chick and then taking out Quills thankfully she fell asleep in the first movie. |
| |
| Charly: |
You're welcome. I just said that about Catch Me because when I mentioned to my mother I went see it, she asked me if it was a movie I would tell her go see. |
| |
| Kat D: |
Changing subject: The segment on Confessions where the "Bachelorette" picks the ugliest guy and why has to be the funniest movie sequence I've seen in a long, long time. |
| |
| Charly: |
Hmm... You'll probably have to refresh my mind about that one. |

Re: I sweat becoming a godfather while being a lapsed Catholic
| Harald: |
|
You know, I was raised in the Catholic south of the Netherlands, and my godfather never did any such thing as making sure I followed Church rules. I think it depends on how conservative this specific kind of catholicism is. |
| |
| Charly: |
You think so? |
| |
| Harald: |
Trust me, it's another lapsed catholic talking to you here. |
| |
| Kat D: |
That image you posted reminds me of the "Catholicism WOW!" campaign in Dogma, Charly. Did you know Pat Berry used to have a "Buddy Christ" on his desk? |
| |
| Charly: |
Pat who? |
| |
| Kat D: |
I don't consider myself a lapsed Catholic; I like to think I'm more of a dangerous threat to the Catholic hierarchy. |
| |
| Charly: |
Well, that seems like a healthy attitude. |
| |
| Kat D: |
Oh, and go ahead and lie to the clergy, especially about things that are none of their business. They have no problem lying to the congregation. |
| |
| Charly: |
(Makes a cross with his fingers.) Back, you demon! Allow this masochist to enjoy his fears about condemning his future goddaughter by being such a merry heretic. |
| |
| Kat D: |
(Tries a bored look before answering.) I won't even dignify that with a comeback. |
