The Devil's Backbone
From The Devil's Backbone (El espinazo del diablo), screenplay by Guillermo del Toro, Antonio Trashorras and David Muñoz

What is a ghost? A tragedy condemned to repeat itself time and again? An instant of pain, perhaps. Something dead which still seems to be alive. An emotion suspended in time. Like a blurred photograph. Like an insect trapped in amber.

A ghost. That's what I am.

More chit-chat about rolling balls: What is destiny? Is it a chain of cause and effect that began with the Big Bang that will continue on for Eternity? Is it, perhaps, genetics, the inherited code of life passed on from generation to generation? Is death destiny? Death is the ultimate destiny: no living organism has ever been able to avoid the ultimate end, the moment when the door must be closed and the keys must be returned to the landlord.

And in the face of all this, what is free will? Is it a fight against the unavoidable? Is it the way we seek to give meaning to a world that cannot be changed?
