Back to Work
Speaking from experience, I can now say with authority that taking an extended break from weblogging can be a wonderful thing. I didn't spend much time following the news either--also a refreshing change. (Sean Penn went to Iraq--how freakin' bizarre is that?) I did have some intensive Gabe-time, caught up on some reading, saw some movies, and generally had a pleasant relaxing, non-internet Christmas. Thanks to some workplace brinksmanship, the health insurance issue has been resolved (one of the few instances where a problem was solved by throwing gobs of money at me, an all together agreeable approach to conflict resolution) Apparently I am a more valuable commodity than I thought.

I did think about blogging, I was just too lazy to get around to it. some of the stupid stuff I would have said if had gotten around to it:

--The whole idea of lowering taxes on wealthy just to increase them on the poor is evil. Not evil in a light-hearted mocking tone, but evil in a theological sense. Any definition of that term ought to include this: anyone who increases fear, pain and suffering in others solely for their own material gain. Anyone who condones such a policy should never again refer to themselves as Christian, since they clearly have no understanding of the content of the Gospels.

--I didn't like The Two Towers as much as I think that I should have. The changes in the plot kept distracting me, especially since some of the changes seemed pointless. I'm not a purist, and if Peter Jackson needs to fiddle with the canon to make a better film, fine. But some of the changes seemed pointless. On the other hand--Gollum, wow.

--I'm surprised that anyone is surprised that the North Koreans are ramping up their ability to produce nukes. After all, one of the first acts of the Bush presidency was to embarrass that nation by casting aside years of slow but steady diplomatic progress, He then, during the most important presidential speech since December 1941, essentially named them co-belligerants with the maniacs who flew jetliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. I'd be stockpiling nukes like there was no tomorrow too.

--In general, more things seem to be getting worse than getting better. I don't see any indication that the White House has any ideas on how to change that.

I Drive a Honda Civic. I Always Knew I was a Great Guy
Bumper Mentality. A new book says the SUV is the car of choice for the nation's most self-centered people -- and the bigger the SUV, the more of a jerk its driver is likely to be. [AlterNet]
