Dark City
I don't really know how how this movie slipped past me when it was in the theaters, but I just discovered Dark City on DVD. This move is the best of the comic book genre of science fiction movies. It is more oppressively bleak than Bladerunner and more imaginatively realized than The Matrix. William Hurt, one of my favorite actors, is great in his supporting role, and Jennifer Connelly is profoundly beautiful, not to mention masterful in a role that seems far more challenging that the one which won her an Oscar last year. The DVD also contains a commentary track by Roger Ebert. It is one of the best commentary tracks I have ever heard, and certainly the most erudite. Some college ought to offer graduate credit in Film History for making it through this track. At the very least, you will be able to use the term "German Expressionism" conversationally with confidence.

Father
I had really intended to get back into the whole weblog thing full force after the first of the year. What I did not anticipate was Gabe entering his needy phase. Instead of being just a "lugable" he is now a human being with needs and desires (mostly desires) that must be filled (and filled right now).

From and evolutionary stance, this of course makes perfect sense. Gabe is, however dimly, aware of the dangers that surround him and he knows that his parents and can shield him from those dangers. From a parental stance, this is a giant pain in the ass. The happy infant who once played contentedly on the floor until he went to sleep has grown into the baby who tries on moods they way noir private eyes try on hats. Happy! Sad! Bored! Amusing myself! Pick me up, now! I 'm going to scream, just because I can!

And, just in case you were wondering, The Very Hungry Caterpillar reveals no deeper existential lessons even after several hundred readings.

In another unwelcome development, Gabe is displaying the pigheadedness that is a characteristic of the Anders clan. He is eight months old, and his development is right on track, but he just won't crawl. He hates being on his stomach, and when you put him there, he just refuses to do anything but cry and pathetically beat his feet against the floor. Stubbornness is only charming in other people's children.

So, in short, all future posts will be at the pleasure Gabriel Anders.
