Yeah, We Can Trust Him

That may have been the most unimpressive State of the Union speech I've ever heard. Nearly everything (other than the AIDS initiative--which I like) was simply repeated slogans from the last year of so.

Economy: It was surprising how little attention this received. This is what concerns most Americans, and this is what most wanted to hear about. Just today, the proposed Secretary of the Treasury acknowledged that the problem was over capacity and lack of demand. These problems won't be fixed by tax cuts to business, but rather by a stimulus program aimed at people who will spend money. Nothing here addressed the problems that the administration itself acknowledges.

Government: Why tie the size of government to the growth of income of the American family? Shouldn't government grow (or shrink) in accordance with the problems that the majority party wants to tackle? Why would this coincide with income growth? War, recession, or economic booms are good reasons for the size of government to change out of sync with family income, when the need for government services changes. Pegging it to an artificial number seems destined to either be ignored, or to hobble the government unnecessarily. This is just a bad idea no matter what your political philosophy.

There's more, but I've got to go to work.
