Say what you will about what might have been, what Thurmond should have done, how the South might have been different had Thurmond been straight-up about his interracial relationships, he was no deadbeat. He supported his daughter, sent her to college and was financially reliable throughout her life, Washington-Williams said.
I'm glad Parker cleared that up, because I had always assumed that racist son-of-bitches were also deadbeats. I find it easier to like Thurmond now that I know that while he was spending years of his life tirelessly fighting to deprive his fellow countrymen of basic rights, he was also supporting his own child. Was he Catholic? If he was, we should canonize him. |
