I remember someone telling me that if you look down while you're talking, they'll know you're lying. If you look up, they'll know you don't know the truth. I wonder for a moment if I can really learn to control that. I guess I could try. But not in this case. Eddie isn't worth the effort. And he doesn't really care which way you're looking anyway.
He is extremely excited, even more than usual, and speaking at the speed of sound. I imagine that his words arrive in a sonic boom, and I begin to wonder what would happen if you put Eddie on a supersonic jet,
Eddie says, Whowouldhavethought? Imean, who'dhaveaclue?
I say looking down, Certainly not me.
Ofcourse, Ofcourse, Eddie says, nodding violently. Imean, meamanager? It'scrazy! Firsttheyfireme, twice, now theypromoteme.
Crazy indeed, I say.
I look to my side, to where Jordan was standing, but she's no longer there. She escaped.
I say, You know, this is all very interesting but I have to go. And I'm sure you have a lot of things to do. Memos to read, people to see and so on.
Yes, yes, Eddie says. Tednowworksforme, didyouknowthat?
I say, That's the first thing you told me today just after you got here, if I'm not mistaken.
Right, right. Well, gottago. Dutycalls!
He surprises me by actually doing what he is supposed to do, and walks towards the elevators. Suddenly, I realize that his hyperactivity is gone. So I say to his back, By the way, what happened to your fort on the sixth floor? No more worries?
Oh! Eddie says, smiling, I'vedecidedIwill worrylessandjust...beme fromnowon.
Then he turns around again and walks away.
He'll just be himself?
I'm not a believer, but there's only one thing going through my mind right now.
God help us.
