David Hicks' Daily Doings

Being a weblog recounting my daily concerns and activities.

Hooray! No more 3am wake-ups to work at Tesco! Okay, no more money from Tesco either, but £5 an hour won't be missed that much anyway. Time to start looking for a new job, methinks... Went to bed for a quick snooze yesterday about 1:30pm, woke up when my alarm went off at 3am this morning. Damn, I slept around the clock! It's 9pm and I'm feeling tired, somehow I've managed to get jet-lagged without going anywhere.

Following on from the last post, it seems that Ali G is now hitting America. Let's just hope they get the joke... Actually, that reminds me - must toddle off to a Footlights show again someday soon, see what the next generation of comedians is likely to be up to. One minor barrier to this plan: after essential purchases (muffins, milk), can't-resist-a-bargin-damn-I've-got-to-stop-shopping-in-these-manipulative-supermarkets purchases (grapes, bottle of bucks fizz) and postage for a couple of book orders (hey, look down the right hand side there, bargins the lot of them) I've got 36p left in my entertainment budget for the week. And you really just aren't going to get a lot of entertainment for 36p.

Seems that Salon (the people who this blog is hosted with) are on the ropes (yet) again and getting, bizzarly, hate mail. Like, wha? Hate mail? For a news site? Can you imagine people writing in to The Gaurdian going "Ha ha! Die, evil liberalist scum!"? Does the whole of America over-react like this, or is this just journalists creating a bit of a storm in a coffee(because it's American, right?)cup?

If this sort of thing happened in England, the publication in question would just dissapear quietly off the shelves / web without comment. Actually, it'd have to be shelves because I can't think offhand of any British news websites other than the BBC... Deep in suburbia, behind closed net curtains, it might be quietly commented that the sort of people that read that publication might be a bit short of reading material these days, but that's about the limit.

Quite a lot of social analysis and classification seems to be based on what newspaper was read in the house where someone grew up. So, old chap... Er, were your parents Times or Sun readers? Growing up with the wrong sort of newspaper can have a seriously detrimental effect on your intulectual well-being. Too low-brow and it'll stunt your growth, too high-brow and it'll give you ideas above your station (incase you're wondering, Dad had an argument with the local Co-Op around 1973 and has refused to buy a paper from them since, on principle...).
